Cinematographer Dean Semler, ASC, ACS Utilizes Company's Extensive Post Offerings for Grudge Match

EC3, the on-location services arm of post facilitiesCompany 3 and EFILM, is proud to announce the completion of all location color and data management work for Warner Bros.' Grudge Match, shot in New Orleans. The boxing-themed feature film, starring Robert De Niro, Sylvester Stallone, Kim Basinger and Alan Arkin is directed by Peter Segal and shot by Dean Semler, ASC, ACS. In addition to being produced far from any major post facility, the project involved an intricate mix of cameras and formats.Semler’s main camera package included 3, Panavision Genesis cameras. It also included ARRI’s Alexa, for the boxing sequences and, Canon, RED, Sony, and Panasonic cameras, which Semler used for specialty shots and aerial footage.

During principal photography, Semler made extensive use of the EFILM Colorstream system to build and preview looks on set for his hero Genesis camera and was able to interface directly with the dailies colorist, working with a Colorfront On-Set Dailies (OSD) system nearby, on refinement to those looks, as well as interpretations of the material captured with the many additional cameras. The set-up allowed the unit to see the film's various looks taking shape very quickly, without having to communicate to a far-off facility or wait for dailies to be shipped back and forth.

"It was a wonderful shoot," recalls Semler, who is set to oversee the digital intermediate work at EFILM in Hollywood later this year. "I have been a big fan of the Colorstream since I started shooting digitally and it was very helpful to know all the material from all the different cameras was being processed and graded right near the set so I could communicate directly with my colorist."

"Grudge Match is a perfect example of the power and efficiency EC3 offers," adds EC3's Production Manager Marc Ross. "This was a complex project that would once have required the work of a major post facility. That would have made it less convenient to shoot the film where they did. But with EC3, the 'post production facility' goes with the production--wherever shooting takes place."

"Grudge Match served as an excellent proof of concept for EC3," adds Stefan Sonnenfeld, President, Deluxe Creative Services. "Even on the most elaborate features, clients no longer need to come to us for post production services. We can go to them anywhere in the country, anywhere in the world."
