EFILM’S MITCH PAULSON COLORS SUPERHERO HORROR FILM ‘BRIGHTBURN’

What if a child from another world crash-landed on Earth, but instead of becoming a hero to mankind, he proved to be something far more sinister? “Brightburn” explores that premise and presents a radical new genre: superhero horror. Produced by “Guardians of the Galaxy” filmmaker James Gunn, the film is helmed by Director David Yarovesky and Cinematographer Mike Dallatorre, who worked with EFILM senior Colorist Mitch Paulson on the film’s color finish.

“Our theme for the cinematography on ‘Brightburn’ was to make it look as if a horror film was invaded by a superhero movie, and those two worlds needed to seamless coexist. Mitch was a master of understanding what we wanted to drive the film and how to get us there technically, ultimately delivering a final look that provides an avant-garde take on the two genres,” noted Dallatorre, who had previously worked with EFILM through its sponsorship of Film Independent’s Project Involve program, where he was a Fellow.

For filming, Paulson provided a LUT that, while cinematic, played up grittier aspects of the footage; he explained, “Dave and Mike didn’t want a glossy superhero movie, or fall into the blue- or green-heavy typical horror look. Instead we kept the visuals more realistic and used the color finish to amplify how the color red appears on screen.”

Red is signature color of main character Brandon Breyer, the boy with the super powers. On set, red was used very sparingly and only in association with Brandon. During the final color, Paulson made sure the red look was consistent, toning down or pushing up the hue as needed. He also played up the vibrancy of the blood in the film, making for a gorier, more satisfying horror experience.

Dallatore described, “Mitch’s LUT gave us a great base for the film’s look. Then during the final color, he gave us great creative options, despite some of our ideas being a bit unconventional. His knowledge and expertise were indispensable.”

“David likes to push the boundaries and come up with inventive ideas that are outside the box. And Mike is incredibly knowledgeable and technical with a phenomenal eye. They’re both fun to work with and I can’t wait to see what they do next,” said Paulson.

Paulson worked at Deluxe’s EFILM facility in Hollywood to complete the SDR and HDR home video, theatrical, Dolby Cinema color finishes of the film.
