EFILM Celebrates Film Independent's 2019 Project Involve Fellows

Continuing its collaboration with Film Independent, EFILM is proud to have provided color finishing services for six original short films developed and produced by the 2019 Project Involve Fellows, including American Bodies , Black Boy Joy , The Terrorist , Lonely Blue Night , Swim and La Gloria . The films, which will premiere at Arclight Cinemas in Hollywood on October 15, were created as part of Film Independent Project Involve, an intensive, nine-month program designed to mentor emerging filmmakers from diverse backgrounds, helping them hone skills, form creative partnerships, gain industry access and ultimately create a short film. EFILM worked with the filmmakers from the start of the program, providing an educational rundown of production planning considerations in preparation for post and finishing the final project.

Directed by Rammy Park, American Bodies follows workers at the American Bodies Institute and Manufactory who prepare rubberized human organs for shipment worldwide. Park and Cinematographer Kunitaro Ohi worked with EFILM Senior Colorist Jason Hanel to bring the desired look to the short.

“About 95 percent of the short was shot indoors in a single location, so a change in the lighting presentation was paramount; both in terms of keeping audience interest and invoking the tonal changes. From a technical standpoint, my gaffer and I used a combination of tungsten and LED fixtures to replicate the warm industrial lighting,” explained Ohi.

Park wanted to create a “wet and oozing” look that progressed alongside the story, but limited time during production did not allow for lighting shifts between setups. Working with Park and Ohi, Hanel was able to apply the appropriate color shift and desaturation needed to achieve Park’s desired look evolution, which bolsters the thematic elements of the story.

“Jason’s color finishing was instrumental for fulfilling our creative vision, and I was pleasantly surprised by the generous level of care EFILM put out for a small project like ours,” noted Ohi.
