EFILM continues to push forward with 4K Digital Intermediates. We generated a full 4K Digital Intermediate feature film for Warner Bros. film, "Ocean's Twelve", for director Steven Soderbergh.
The film was scanned, assembled, color corrected and recorded in 4K resolution throughout the entire DI process. We have previously generated 4K images for Spider Man-2, but the visual effects were rendered in 2K. This is the first full 4K DI in the industry because all the elements, including visual effects, were processed in 4K.
The obvious challenge was to efficiently move the increased volume of data while preserving the workflow and making it transparent to the client's creative process. Each frame contains four times the data of the 2K process and EFILM's proprietary software effectively managed the workflow.
Terra Bliss, EFILM project manager for the feature, attributes a large measure of the success to Steven Soderbergh's incredible organization and clarity of vision for his film. "Steven was the ideal client for such a technically challenging project and our engineering team deserves high praise for their meticulous preparation".
EFILM colorist Mike Eaves says, "the real payoff came at the end of the process when we viewed absolutely pristine film prints that could only result from the full 4K process".
